All three Spiders’ masters sides are done for the year, marking an end to the inaugural Sydney Masters League, organised by BNSW
The Women’s opens team had a great season finishing runners up. Allira Hudson-Gofers and Jen Loftus led the side in scoring throughout the season, while Meg Peterson led the side in three pointers. A big shoutout to Jo Tucker, Beckie Houghton, Rebecca Grifith, Emily Zuniga, Katarzyna Musial-Gabrys, Glynis Robertson, Rebecca Griffitth and Roesmarie Hudson, who all stepped up throughout the inaugural season.
Despite losing their opening game against the Bruins, the side bounced back to beat Penrith, Norths and a forfeit win against Bulls in the next three rounds. This run earned them a spot in the grand final, but unfortunately yet again falling to the Bruins. The result really wasn’t the story, rather seeing some Spiders’ great back in green and black, loving the game, made the season a huge success.
The Men’s 40+ had a competitive season, characterised by narrow losses but a whole lot of fun none the less. Adam Giliberti, Phillip Yang and Sheldon Tu had a great season, helping to drive the squad on offense. Giliberti led the side in the three pointers made. Glenn Badger, Jony Azizi, Matt Morson, Ryan Zhao, Xingbing He and Jason Winter also helped the side put a rewarding season together.
Meanwhile, the Men’s 50+ also had plenty of highlights throughout their 6 game season. Darren Murphy led the way, averaging 10ppg, notably leading scoring in a thrilling one point victory vs Sutherland. The side also got a win against Manly with Steve Glynn stepping up with 10 points in that game. Despite another 10 point performance from Murphy, and Alber Goh, the squad fell short against Norths in the finals.
The side also featured Matt Mezgec, Paul Mackie, Will Boyle, Jeff Wong, Ignacio Bandal, Duncan Knight, Milos Sponja, Milos Saponja and Giles Berry, who all represented the Spiders proudly.
The Spiders would like to thank all players, volunteers, coaches and fans who made year one of the Sydney Masters League possible. We were proud to be one of the few clubs to field squads in all three competitions. Until next season, Go Spiders!
